Smash-and-Grab Attempt is a Bust

Engineer Credits 3M™ Scotchshield™ Ultra Safety & Security Film

Situation

Cumming Cockburn Limited Consulting engineers, planners and environmental scientists were used to the early morning wake up calls informing them that once again their offices had been the target of a burglary. Their offices are situated in a business park that booms in the day, but is a prime target for crime after dark. As well, the offices are on the bottom floor of the complex surrounded by windows, which made the firm’s particular offices an easy target for numerous break-ins. Attempts to stop these break-ins failed time after time. The main problem the firm faced was that the criminals could smash the windows of the offices, grab the equipment and flee before the police had a chance to respond to the alarms that were set off by the thieves. When their lease came up for review, the company searched for a way to solve their problems.

Solution

What the firm discovered was that security systems alarming the police were ineffective for the smash and grab crimes. Mainly because such burglaries take place before the police officers reach the scene. Cumming Cockburn Limited needed a system that would stop the thieves from entering their offices all together. What they found was 3M™ Scotchshield™ Security window Film. As a result of their search the firm insisted on the installation of security film as a last resort before abandoning the area for a safer location when negotiating their lease.

Results

Just prior to Christmas, the firm experienced another smash and grab attempt on their equipment. However, this time nothing was stolen. The outside layer of glass had been smashed showing signs of impact on the inner pane of glass containing the security film. As well, there was damage to the window frame as a result of the attempted burglar trying numerous times to break the window. So why didn’t the burglar succeed? One reason, according to Cumming Cockburn Limited was their decision to install 3M™ Scotchshield™ Ultraflex System. The system combines micro thin layers of Scotchshield™ security window film with a flexible attachment method to hold glass and window frames together under extreme stress. Combine all these elements and it is very difficult to break through glass.

The 3M Difference

Cumming Cockburn Limited no longer gets waked up calls informing them that their offices have once again been broken into. They can now sleep soundly knowing that 3M™ Scotchshield™ Ultra Safety & Security Film is forever guarding their equipment.

“The would-be-thief left without gaining access to our offices and we also avoided the disruption of having to replace computers and reorganize our systems to minimize down time...we are truly satisfied with the results of the first “real” test we have experienced with window security film” remarked Robert Wingate, Director of Engineering for Cumming Cockburn Limited.
