Centennial College
Indigenous Art / Custom Graphics
Overview
Convenience Group worked alongside Window Film Canada (WFC) on an important Indigenous graphic installation for Centennial College’s A-Building Expansion. This transformative project is Canada’s first LEED Gold, zero carbon, WELL-certified mass timber higher-education facility. With the building rooted in an Indigenous perspective, it seamlessly combines sustainability and culture.
Precise alignment of the baffle design with the designer’s visual vision was essential.
The Challenge
The challenge for this project was to deliver graphics that both honored Indigenous culture and complemented the innovative, sustainable design of the building. The installation needed to reflect the core values of Centennial College, which was designed with “Two-Eyed Seeing”, a philosophy that harmonizes Indigenous wisdom with Western knowledge.
Beyond the technical aspect, another challenge was the installation of the art on baffles. Each individual baffle had to be aligned to create a larger, cohesive image. Additionally, due to the natural patterns chosen by the artists, the wood texture underneath needed to remain visible. To address this, we recommended using 3M transparent films to protect the art while still showcasing the natural surface beneath.
Our Solution
Convenience Group was responsible for the printing and size coordination of all graphic installations. Working closely with WFC’s project management team, we ensured the graphics fit perfectly with the building’s design and contributed to its visual and cultural integrity.
Key elements of our solution included:
Sustainability: Our printing processes adhered to the project’s environmental goals, using eco-friendly materials that aligned with the building’s LEED and zero-carbon targets.
Custom Printing: High-quality, eco-friendly prints were created to meet the design specifications.
Size Coordination: Meticulously measured to fit each surface, in consultation with WFC’s team.
The Results
The Indigenous graphics are now an integral part of Centennial College’s A-Building, aligning with the institution’s commitment to truth and reconciliation, and creating a visually powerful learning environment. This installation demonstrates how education facilities can integrate culture and sustainability seamlessly.
